As I mentioned, giving everything in the garden Miracle Gro was a sort of emergency measure as I got the whole project started. So your timing is impeccable ;-) I do have difficulties finding even standard gardening supplies here - bone meal, for example! - but if I keep hunting, surely I can locate what I'll need...! If nothing else, there are some propietary rose foods, though these always seem to have everything else that I don't need at the moment (insecticides and/or fungicides). I'm glad to see Christopher Lloyd's opinion as I really wasn't sure the own-root selection would be making much of a difference - so many variables in gardening!Amy@SmallSunnyGardenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02490564566463354419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3315847063483821430.post-85500070977413225062015-10-05T11:30:38.308-07:002015-10-05T11:30:38.308-07:00I am very impressed with the amazing and beautiful...I am very impressed with the amazing and beautiful roses you manage to grow in your soil and climate. Christopher Lloyd the late owner of Great Dixter http://www.greatdixter.co.uk always maintained that roses had more vigour when grown on their own roots.
You have obviously carried out a lot of research to ensure you care for them well in your situation which has handsomely paid off.
I therefore hesitate to offer advice, have you tried feeding them with a high potash flower fertiliser instead of Miracle Grow. We have in the UK Vitax HP soluble fertiliser that can be applied through the Miracle Grow hose attachment. It should encourage flower production instead of growth. We have a saying over here "Don't teach your granny how to suck eggs" I am sorry if I am doing that.Brian Skeyshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04761762507159759619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3315847063483821430.post-53103473325235712662015-10-04T23:19:09.389-07:002015-10-04T23:19:09.389-07:00This is the first time we've really tried grow...This is the first time we've really tried growing roses in pots so I'm delighted too, Luisa! Some of the David Austin roses are definitely recommended for containers; personally I think Crown Princess Margareta might be a bit too large and robust (expected to reach 5 ft x 3 ft as I recall), but maybe in a very large container...?! Thanks so much :)Amy@SmallSunnyGardenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02490564566463354419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3315847063483821430.post-15877256017627431172015-10-04T23:13:20.138-07:002015-10-04T23:13:20.138-07:00That's such a big compliment, Kris :D I cert...That's such a big compliment, Kris :D I certainly hope this can help! There's such a big difference anyway between selecting for a garden you're creating versus trying to deal with plants already in the yard (I'm thinking of some dwarf Callistemons in front of our house...).Amy@SmallSunnyGardenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02490564566463354419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3315847063483821430.post-90517673233494052652015-10-04T21:35:25.760-07:002015-10-04T21:35:25.760-07:00Yes, a post to bookmark. (How would Crown Princess Margareta do in a container, I wonder?) I have always loved the David Austins, and yours are beautiful. I'd love to add a few roses to my garden next year - with your guidance I hope to be far happier with my choices in the future than I am at present with the roses I inherited with my garden.Kris Petersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07097260283693156795noreply@blogger.com
