Just before Christmas the big rose bush on the patio began sending out a bloom or two. Now it is loaded with blossoms so I've cut four for today's vase.
The bush in question is "Sun Flare", a floribunda raised in 1981 by Warriner. Despite its character as a cluster-flowered variety, many of the blooms just now are on sufficiently long stems to cut and slip into a small glass.
I'm afraid I am the sort of person who finds it easier to buy for herself at Christmastime; I do attribute this in part to having hard-to-buy-for people in the family! At any rate, when my sister and I dropped into our little local resale shop a month ago, trying to find something for Mom, I spotted these small glasses - not so well designed for wine since the stems are open and difficult to clean, but very handy for flower stems!
My sister actually beat me to arranging roses in the glass. It was such a perfect match that I made up my own grouping today. Just four roses...
I tried briefly to add a couple of stems with yellow leaves from the pomegranate tree (bush, to be honest!), but they were extraneous to say the least!
So for today just four roses - still with this morning's raindrops on them - in a small glass.
Linking today's vase - as always - to Cathy's meme at
Rambling in the Garden, where a few lovely flowering branches are hinting that winter doesn't last forever...! Here in the desert, however, we are not in a hurry for summer... not with roses like these!
Happy Monday!
Wow Amy - what perfect roses! And that glass is far better suited as a vase than for drinking out of. It will be perfect for all sorts of little posies, won't it? It seems odd you talking about winter when you have these beautiful roses - but we tend to think of our own 'weather' as the norm, I suppose. Thanks for sharing today.
ReplyDeleteYes, the glass might as well have been designed for flowers ;) It was one of a set of four so I hope to eventually use them all together... sometime when I have more flowers. The whole question of winter here takes a little adjusting to even on site. Summer is unmistakable though, so this must be winter! I was thinking earlier that it's wonderful how much I have available in winter here, and how there would have been nothing to use in my Kansas City garden in January, but I'm not so sure after seeing what others are coming up with in colder climes! Hmmm...
DeleteBeautiful roses - so lovely to see at this dark time of year. I guess these months must be a welcome respite for you from the desert conditions of summer.
ReplyDeleteYes, this is a special time here - a little soft rain and cool weather - and the plants adore it. So glad you enjoyed the roses :)
DeleteStunning roses and I love the vase!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Donna! I really enjoyed your post and photos of borage, which I have not yet tried to grow. Your article reminds me of my experiences growing rue... :)
DeleteI love yellow in most incarnations and this rose is no exception. The glasses make perfect vases too.
ReplyDeleteIt would be hard to find a more "perfect" yellow. They bring a quiet glow into the room :) The glasses were a lucky find for flower arranging, weren't they... ;-)
DeleteWhat a beautiful arrangement. Simple, yet so affective. A great find on those vases too. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Angie! I really enjoyed sleuthing out the glasses. Glad you like it :)
ReplyDeleteReally pretty, those glasses were a grand find, and your roses are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Janet! Those glasses might have been made to hold roses...!
DeleteVery pretty glasses and the roses are lovely. I can't see how to follow you, can you let me know, thanks Christina
ReplyDeleteThank you, Christina - glad you liked them!
DeleteI've finally added the subscription widget to the blog (blush, blush). Please bear with me, as I find there are several options and I'm not sure what will work best for readers! Would you be so kind as to check it out and let me know if it works for you? Truth to tell, I always follow blogs direct from my Blogger feed so I'm out to sea on this! I'll probably spend what's left of the weekend reformatting the blog anyway - it needs it! Thanks again!
