In a Vase: Delicate Flowers, Rich Fragrance

The scent went wafting through the kitchen while we were eating.  This week's vase is composed of sweet peas, lemon thyme, and one Sterling Silver rose.  As small as it is, I think possibly this is my most fragrant bouquet yet!

I used a much-loved cup and saucer laden with wisteria blooms: one plant that I definitely do not have in the garden, but it was certainly the right colour for all the cool pinks and purples!

There have been three colours and patterns of sweet peas from the Old Spice mix that I started last autumn.  There is a bright coral pink on pink.

There is a very soft, cool, silvery pink.

And there is a vibrant, two-tone, purple on maroon.  These and the bright pink seem to be more vigorous.

Foliage and tiny flowers came from the lemon thyme, which is blooming heavily at the moment.

I spent much of the morning out with my horse and our veterinarian, trying to resolve what appears to be a recently developed allergy.  It seems such a minor thing -- dust in the hay or perhaps the Bermuda hay itself -- but it has been making life miserable for Johnny and therefore me for a couple of weeks or more now!  Unfortunately, it looks set to take much longer to go away than it did to develop.

Inevitably, today's vase-making and photography were rapid, to say the least.  I took everything outside again for help from the afternoon sun.  But the fragrance was surperb!

Wishing all of you a great week, with thanks to Cathy for hosting this wonderful meme that helps keep Mondays bright!

  2. I'm surprised the lemon thyme has so many cute little flowers. The sweet peas are lovely, I have some Old Spice growing too so I hope it's not too long to flowers, and smells wonderful. They look cute in the cup, Amy.

    1. I think lemon thyme flowers are darling... The plant goes brown and spindly during summer here but otherwise is a lovely thing. Hope your Old Spice sweet peas do well for you; they do seem to be a good choice for scent! Do they bloom all through the summer there?

  3. What a lovely, delicate arrangement! Can't believe you have sweet peas already! Love them, such lovely subtle colours.
Hope you get to the bottom of the allergy problem too!

    1. Thank you, Jane! Sweet peas won't last in summer heat here, so it made sense to try them as a late winter/spring annual - so far, so good, and I can see myself combing the catalogs for next time as I'd like to try some solid blues. Though as you say, these colours are just lovely... I think we're making some (slow) progress on the allergies. Johnny's generally been such a healthy fellow!

  4. You are so right about the colours Amy - the sweet peas, the rose and the teacup are a perfect combination, oh and the thyme too. You must be in perfume heaven! Hope the allergy issue gets sorted soon...

    1. It would be hard to better the fragrance on this one ;-) I'm so glad that I was inspired by seeing sweet peas in various vases last summer; otherwise I don't think they would have been on my to-grow list so soon as they hardly seem like desert plants. But what a good choice they have been!
The allergies are improving gradually - thanks from Johnny and me!

  5. A lovely arrangement and cup and saucer. The scent of sweet peas so evocative of summer here in the uk.The two toned one looks like my favourite one, Cupanii

    1. I keep seeing references to Cupanii; it sounds wonderful! My usual supplier had only this mix, as far as heirloom varieties went, but I shall have to look a bit futher afield at some point! Thanks so much!

  6. Hopefully you have now managed to select a handful of perfume candidates? Now is the time to spray a little on your wrist. Let it dry naturally without rubbing and have a whiff. Oh, by the way, top tip: Don't wear any fragrance when you go perfume shopping for obvious reason. Parfum femme pas cher
