Housekeeping at the Blog

As we head into summer, the garden is, of course, a busy place.  And so is the blog!
As you can see, I decided it was time for a bit of redesign!  I'm not entirely satisfied with it, especially as in the mobile version my main changes are simplified out of the design altogether.  So I will probably be tinkering a little longer.

In the meantime, I want to apologize to those of you who have been finding it difficult to leave comments here!  I have gone over my settings for comments -- even changed them briefly -- but I am fairly certain the problem does not lie there.  I suspect it is an unfortunate side effect as Blogger rolls out its new https settings; if so, it should be corrected fairly soon -- one would hope, at any rate!  Please continue to try!

At the same time, I may as well mention that I am still having significant trouble leaving comments on some WordPress sites.  A number of you have worked this out already, having caught my remarks going into your spam bins many months ago.  (I really don't think they belong there!)  But on some blogs the problem continues, and it seems to be the same old issue of a good faith comment ending up in spam.  Not to say too much about WordPress/Blogger wars, but if you have a WP blog, and I and other Blogspot people have not commented for awhile, you might want to check your spam bin...  Some blogs I have despaired of getting through on, sadly.  And the problem prevents me from interacting on newly discovered WP blogs altogether, which is very disturbing!   A note particularly to Cathy:  I left two comments on your posts and they disappeared (this usually happens to me there), but I am still trying to make sure you know I really appreciate your heads-up regarding your inability to comment here!  Also that I thoroughly enjoy your blog!

As for other matters, I am looking forward to adding a new feature here.  I have wanted to create a small encyclopedia of plants for the desert gardener.  This will involve plant-specific posts as well as a separate page or two with basic information that can be easily accessed.  I hope it will be useful!  This will have to go in slowly, plant by plant, but hopefully I can start soon.

A big thank you to all my readers!

  2. Indeed the Wordpress/Blogger wars are an ongoing (and irritating) issue. Why can't we all just get along!? And kudos to you for redesigning in spring! That's a task I usually leave for the winter time, but even then haven't gotten to is for a couple of years.

    1. I've been itching to do a redesign for so long, it was bound to happen at some inopportune moment - like May ;-) It really seems a bit silly the two main blogging platforms can't be made to interact better! Admittedly, I don't know much about what is going on so perhaps I'm laying blame at the wrong place...

  3. The Wordpress/Blogger problem does rear its ugly head with some frequency. It's hard to avoid wondering if a software developer on one side or another (or both) has a grudge going.

    1. I suppose it may just be the two platforms "not talking to each other", but it does seem strange they work so badly at times! Like you, I require openID to avoid spam, but it seems only Wordpress people are having trouble leaving comments?! Hmmmm...

  4. The Tec bods do not seem to make things simple for us lesser mortals. While I blog on Blogger I have a word press Gravatar which I use to comment on WP blogs.

    1. Perhaps I should look into Gravatar, Brian! I've avoided it as just one more online ID I'd have to keep track of, but maybe it would help... and maybe I should thin out some of the others I don't use anymore! ;-)

  5. I can do it now, Amy! I played around with cookies or something, and suddenly your comment box (and Kris') was back. So sorry you've had trouble on my blog too! I shall look at the settings as you have done. I loved your last week's vase, but my computer sealed my mouth. Always enjoy your blog too ..

    1. So glad you managed, Cathy :) Thanks for trying again; it's been such a frustrating thing lately! I love your vase this week and hope someone can ID the shrub; it's quite lovely! And now I shall try to leave a note on your blog -- we shall see... ;-)

  6. So sorry you have been having issues Amy. I know I had problems leaving comments before with my WP account but through Google it is obviously fine. Hope you can resolve things. The encyclopedia idea for the blog sounds great. I always love reading your posts.

    1. I'm really looking forward to starting those new posts - now that I can get back to the internet :P Thanks so much, Kate! I'm realizing how good it is to have more than one platform through which to keep in touch with friends... :)
