Two roses created the idea for today's vase: Sterling Silver and Sun Flare. Both are classic hybrid tea varieties developed forty to sixty years ago.
To the roses I added some violas...
...and a few sprigs of pigeonberry (Duranta erecta).
All went into a lovely little bone china teacup given to me by my sister.
I have no wisteria flowers to match those on the cup and saucer, but the colour of "Sterling Silver" is actually quite a good match, I think.
Some rather cool hues - just the thing for early summer!
Don't forget to see all the other Monday vases at Rambling in the Garden...
Happy Monday!
ed. I remembered belatedly that "Sun Flare" is actually a floribunda. It does sometimes throw roses on single stems (just as "Sterling Silver" will happily throw buds in clusters!) - as was true of these that I cut. But technically it is a cluster-flowered rose...

Beautiful! I've never thought of pulling out one of my seldom-used china cups to serve as a vase. Now you've put the idea in my head so it may be picked up in one of my vase posts one day.
ReplyDeleteI'll look forward to seeing yours, Kris! I enjoy matching my flowers with the floral and colour motifs on the cups. The fact that they are fairly small also lets me use flowers that might disappear in a large bouquet...
DeleteHmm, I can see me starting to look out for cups and saucers at boot fairs - and I could make sure I matched the contents with the motifs ever time .... only joking on that last bit though! Makes me think of using wisteria in a vase which I hadn't contemplated before. Sterling Silver is beautiful and so different from the usual colours of roses we see, and somehow the other elements blend with it perfectly, particularly the way you have got that soft focus in your last picture. Thanks so much for sharing
ReplyDeleteI imagine you could match them every time, Cathy! Some wisteria would make a lovely vase; I wonder whether the stems should be treated before arranging? You're quite right about Sterling Silver - it's ability to blend makes it invaluable for vases, something I never knew before following this meme ;-) Thanks for dropping by after your long trip!
Deletebeautiful colour combinations and in such a pretty vintage cup and saucer! I am learning such a lot about different flowers and in particular rose varieties from your lovely blog.
ReplyDeleteI hope to use that cup and saucer again sometime as they were very inspiring. I have been amazed at the preponderance of mid-century rose varieties here, and also surprised to learn that there is actually quite a bit of commercial rose growing locally. So hopefully that is a good omen for the rose bed ;-) Thanks so much, Ann!
Delete(btw, I had to edit the post. "Sun Flare" is actually a floribunda...!)
A beautiful vase Amy, the idea of using a cup of tea enhances the beauty of the roses.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I love these tea sets, the soft touch of Chinese porcelain :)
Happy week !!
A pleasant combination, isn't it, Belén :) I agree: the bone china has such a warm, light touch - very sweet! Have a lovely week :)
