Very Short Post: A Jewel in the Garden

hummingbird, garden photography, amy myers, small sunny garden, desert garden
Sprite has gotten a good deal bolder around me.  And somehow, somehow, I managed to get the focus right on him for a fraction of a second.  (My 85 mm lens, while admirable in many respect, has a very slow autofocus which is almost useless around the hummingbirds.)  I am coming to the conclusion that Sprite is, after all, an Anna's hummingbird.  Can any of you give me any pointers on identification?

Just had to share this!

  1. I am no expert on hummingbirds, unsurprisingly, but I can say he is exquisitely beautiful. Well done for capturing the shot!

    1. He is indeed... no expertise needed to enjoy, fortunately for me ;-) Thanks a lot, Jessica!

    1. Absolutely, Angie ;-) I think I whooped when I saw it come up on the camera screen - which is not something I do often...!

  3. Ah, you've given him a name! He's a handsome fellow. He looks like an Anna's to me but I'm not an expert on hummingbird identification.

    1. He's such a personable little guy; he deserved a name ;-) You know how it is with hummingbirds - the color can look different in different lights, but I'm definitely leaning toward Anna's now...

    1. Thanks so much, Ann! He's gotten much more confident around me and comes a lot closer, but how I got the focus reasonably right that fast, I do not know...

  5. Amy, that is a sublime photo! You must waited patiently for ages before taking it. I haven't a clue what it is but it is totally beautiful. Love the name!

    1. Actually, I must admit that I just seized the camera and aimed in this case ;-) But there was some work (if such it can be called) in whistling and talking to him and generally getting him to let me come closer. The ID is still out, but at present I'm thinking it's an Anna's hummingbird. A good trip through Google Images seems to point that direction at any rate!
