It was just the basic yellow daisy (Argyranthemum frutescens), not a named variety nor an unusual colour... I had read that it was grown only as an annual here in the low desert, so I didn't give it much care. Even through the hottest part of summer, it only received patchy watering.
And now, having proven itself more or less perennial here (because summer is what kills most of the plants, not winter), it is going on to bloom...
I have much more respect for the basic yellow daisy now. The butterflies and I agree: this is a wonderful plant!
I love Argyrantemum and in prior years have had quite of few - they usually last a couple of years here before becoming woody and scraggly. Perhaps your post will encourage me to pick up some this fall when I'm ready to plant my newly lawn-less areas.
ReplyDeleteApparently it's far better adapted to this climate than I had supposed, Kris - all to the good. I think you have a wider range of varieties available there; I'll look forward to seeing what you find :) Now I'm going to keep an eye out for a softer yellow variety for the SE corner...
DeleteWhat ever its name if the butterflies like it its a winner.
ReplyDeleteTrue enough, Brian :) They'll probably find some more here one of these days...
