Tuesday View

Is it just my imagination, or do the plants look happier?  We've had an honest cooldown over the last few days, coupled with something like an honest thunderstorm last night.  At any rate the gardener is feeling better!

With the cooler weather and a little additional moisture, the Perovskia has been looking a bit better...

...much to the approval of the bees.

And maybe a little touch of pink is returning to centers of the cream-colored miniature rose, along with that rare thing here: rain spotting.

The Perovskia is just visible behind the now-rampant Pennisetum in the South Border.  Muhlenbergia capillaris "Regal Mist" is getting ready for its autumn explosion of bloom.  I hope it will give a good showing, but I've kept it quite dry this summer while trying to make sure other, more vulnerable plants survived.  Here's hoping anyway!

Thanks to Cathy for hosting the Tuesday Border meme at Words and Herbs!  I missed last week as we were in the midst of a mini family reunion, which overlapped with a serious illness of one of our dogs.  This time last week I was rushing to the nearest known 24/7 pharmacy -- a 40 minute drive one way.   Next morning we were sitting in front of the vet's office, waiting his arrival.  All is well now, I am happy to say, with a very sweet mini Schnauzer in full recovery.  This week looks to be a bit more sane... or did till a few moments ago, when our stovetop just decided to act up!

Despite having its own ups and downs, the garden is still a wonderful antidote to many woes -- one of the best places to remember that "God's in his heaven; All's right with the world."

  1. It is remarkable what differences we can see after just a few days and a drop of rain, isn't it! The grasses are starting to flower here too and it always seems like a grand finale of summer with their firework style flowers. Look forward to seeing some Muhlenbergia blooms soon! Hope this week is more relaxing than last Amy, and good to hear your little doggie is better now. :)

    1. Fireworks is a good description for the grasses! And yes, the plants respond more quickly than I expect to the nicer weather - always encouraging! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, Cathy, and have a great trip :)

  2. I'm glad to here the dog is on the mend! My garden is just a smidge cooler too - maybe fall really is on its way to us! The grasses in your garden look great. This time of year I'm always asking myself why I haven't planted more.

    1. Yes, the dog is recovering well now! I'm doing the same about the grasses - and a bit mad at myself for not picking up a nice pot of Bouteloua "Blonde Ambition" the other day, though Sunset doesn't recommend it for zone 12 - still wondering if it might work anyway... ;-)

  3. Hi Amy, thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! It took me a while to stop by your blog, but finally I am here.
The section of the flower bed that you are showing looks pretty nice! I love Perovskia and it should do well in my own garden, but for some reason I don't grow it myself. I should change that in the near future and just get it. It is such a pretty plant.
So glad to read that your dog is doing better. We have two Dobermans and I am always freaking out when something is wrong with them. It is so nervwrecking when they are ill.
    Warm regards, until hopefully soon!

    1. Hi Christina :) Glad to see you here! It took me forever to try Perovskia, but it's been a very good choice for this border, getting along on really minimal water. It did suffer from the prolonged 110+ heat this year but is coming out of that well too, so I'm not complaining!
Dogs do get us freaked out when they get sick, don't they?! Do your Dobies get ill often? They're such beautiful dogs!
Hope to see you again soon!

  4. The grasses and perovskia ,along with the mounding textures makes this border so lovely!

    1. Thanks so much, Eliza :) Your comment makes me realize how much the mounding plants predominate in this border (the bed opposite it focuses more on upright plants for structure). I'll have to keep that in mind as I work out the North Border... ;-)

  5. I remember March in Porterville when the temperature turned kinder. And perhaps the first light rain. And how the garden exploded with relief! It is a reassuring relief to experience.
